Class Descriptions

What To Expect
I wanted to give you an idea of what to expect from the classes.  This is not a class you've seen any where else.  This is not arts & crafts time, and I don't just let the kids loose either!  I have to be honest, no one I have ever heard of in Utah teaches students to use the right side of their brain to draw.  I think it is a disservice to the kids who want to learn.  I also believe that you can teach anyone, regardless of inborn talent, to draw.  It is a skill, and it can be learned, if you have someone who can teach you step by step to reprogram your brain!  I try to do that.

I follow a lesson plan each week.  We don't have unstructured time.  There is a method of teaching, and an order to it, and this is what I follow.  So, that said, your child is not going to come home with a masterpiece the first block, possibly even the second.  And that is okay!  We will have pieces we work on each week as we learn new techniques.  As we build each week on what we have learned previously, it is really important that you make it to each class.  It is also important that you stay in the classes long enough to learn the basics.  Training the brain alone takes a minimum of 6 weeks.  For some, it is an ongoing process for quite some time.  So please be patient as we learn to draw!

I like the students to focus on things they do that they like or are proud of.  Each step they are trying something new or different, and sometimes it is hard.  But in every drawing there is something we accomplish that is new for us, a step in progression, and I try to help them find that and write it down.

One other note, especially for Drawing 1, this is going to tax their brains!  They will feel mentally worn out sometimes, and that is actually a great sign!  They have to learn to shut the left brain down, and that is really hard because for most people, the left brain does all the thinking!  It doesn't like to be turned off or set aside.  And it takes a lot of concentration to let your right brain do its job.  So if your student comes home feeling tired, you can secretly know that their brain is doing exactly what we want!  It is the best sign you can look for, even more than what ends up in the drawing pad!

Art Elements Ages 4-6 (*MUST be potty trained!)
This class can be taken for at least 4 semesters without any lessons being repeated.

The goal of this class is to expose younger children to art in a way that is geared for their curious minds, to help them learn to see things differently, look more closely at the things around them and enjoy the creative process.  We will learn about famous artists as we explore the Elements of Art.  We will have new projects each week that will keep the children excited and involved with their minds and hands.
We will be covering the Fundamentals of art in a very basic and easy to understand way!

Art Fundamentals Ages 5-12

This class can be taken for 7 semesters without any lessons being repeated.

We will explore a lot of fundamentals in a very fun way.
The Fundamentals of art teach about the use of Color, Value, Texture, Shape, Line & Form.  Each level will add to the previous one, teaching more in depth and with the creation of more involved projects.  We will also learn to compare art works and artists.

This is awesome for anyone wanting a more typical art curriculum for their kids.  It won't be a rigorous as Drawing, but will teach tons and tons of fundamentals that are necessary for any budding or progressing artist!  As the levels progress we will be tackling bigger projects that take longer to finish, and I am excited about that!  It is so much fun as you get older to put more time into a piece, there is a bigger sense of accomplishment that comes with that.  Art Fundamentals will involve drawing, painting, chalk pastels, oil pastels, tempera, watercolor, and misc. mediums.  It will be a lot of fun!

Acrylic Painting (Ages 9+ )
No previous experience required
(not always available, if it isn't scheduled and you are interested please let me know!)
We will work on completing some paintings in class.  The number will vary based on the student's experience and the difficulty and size of the project.

Supplies Needed:
*A basic set of acrylic paint (primary colors, white, black, yellow ochre, burnt umber) we can mix our own colors as long as they have a good basic set.
*Paint brushes: various sizes, but smaller rather than larger.  Make sure they are for watercolors or acrylics.
*A brush cleaner (these are jars or tubs that you can fill with water to clean the brushes)
*a roll of paper towels
*canvas or paper (that is specifically for  acrylics- it will be thicker than regular drawing paper.)
*Palette: I use the kind that come in what looks like a drawing pad- they are just disposable papers
*a picture or collage of what you want to paint
*drawing pencil: either 2H, H, HB B, or 2B (NOT CHARCOAL!)
*table easel

Arts, Crafts & Games (Ages 5-10)

This is a TWO Hour class so that parents can have a break and run errands during the summer months.

This class will be fun crafts and art projects.  We will have a different project each week.
We will also incorporate some fun games and play time to make this their favorite day of the week!

We will also have snacks that are fruits or vegetables available.

All Supplies are included
(papers, paints, markers, pastels, and a box for carrying our projects home, etc.)
*You will want to have your child wear an apron or an old shirt- we tend to get our hands a little messy!

Arts & Crafts (Ages 5-10 )
This class will be fun crafts and projects that are intended to just allow the students to have fun with art.  We will have a different project each week.  There will be less structure as far as lessons, and more time hands on painting, drawing, gluing, etc.!

All Supplies are included

Color Theory (Ages 10+)
(not always available, if it isn't scheduled and you are interested please let me know!)
This class will use different mediums to explore the art of color.  We will learn the color wheels.  We will mix our own paints.  And we will complete projects that help us understand the relationships of all of the colors and how they interact and react to others.

I will supply the paper, paint brushes and mediums we will be using.  I would encourage wearing an apron or at least a shirt you are not concerned about getting paint on!

Design Principles (Ages 11+)
(not always available, if it isn't scheduled and you are interested please let me know!)
We will learn how to use the laws of art to plan out our pieces so that they are balanced.  Placements have significant meanings, and we will go over those.  We will also learn to use a compasses (not a typo!) to plan our design based on the laws of Sacred Geometry (as the Masters' used).

The projects we will work on will be in pencil.  Please bring an image from a magazine or a photo that you would like to draw for this project.

I will supply the tools needed, drawing boards, nice drawing paper, and pencils, eraser, sharpeners will be available.  If the student has their own drawing pencils I would encourage them to bring those.

If you would like your own set of supplies:  drawing board and a small set of pencils, eraser and pencil sharpener, compasses and metal cork-backed ruler I will purchase those for you.  That would cost an additional $35.  You can add that to your cart and I will get the supplies for you to keep.
